l have an 07 cobalt ss sc, when l bought the car l asked if it had a block heater (like l do any other car) the sales guy said yes of course. Later l find out there is no block heater so l go back and tell them, they tell me that my car doesnt need a block heater and it will be just fine. This morning l get up it is about -22C outside and my car doesnt start. (i live in canada) So l call the dealership again and talk to another guy, he informs me NOT to get a block heater because it will wreck the supercharger. Is this true? He said something about how the block heater causes the oil to get warm and that is what will do the damage.

He instructed me to pick up a battery blanket and put that on it.

So now im talking to my friend who is taking some mechanic classes or something and l tell him and he says that they're pissing around with me; and that a block heater will not do anything to the supercharger.
Does anyone have any advice? should l or should l not put a block heater in my car!!!
Imo i'd think it would be better instead of just having a warm battery... isnt it hard on everything to start really cold? It gets to -40C where l live...

l have a block heater in my car (No supercharger) But l fail to see how a block heater would do any harm to a supercharger. When it is cold l also use the battery heater, usually l plug in when temps r expected to be zero or below. There r oil heaters out there also, but l would not use one (Use a synthetic oil that flows good in cold weather, Mobil one or Valvoline) because the oil heaters do heat the oil & will send warm oil to cold parts. Your car should start better during cold snaps & l do not see issues concerning the supercharger.

Block heater will be your best investment. The cold start will take more from the engine than anything else. superchargers are not affected by block heaters, if they were there would be a lot of unhappy diesel owners out there.

Generally l would suggest against it since you usually want your oil to run as cool as possible and the engine to not over heat due to the power which is way you always put an intercooler with a supercharger. But in this case l think a block heater would be acceptible since there really is no way to start it. But you should get mad at the dealership for false infomation on vehical purchase and get a free one or something at least. The seller lied to you.

Get the block heater. Deisel truck drivers leave them running for the shear reason to keep the oil viscous at all times. The only thing that effects a supercharger is extreme dirt and lack of drive oil. It is seperately encased in the drive snout. there is a service plug to keep it up to level and by all means use Gm supercharger oil. A good mechanic will know what to do. You have extreme temps that warrant that item. Track stars warm up before an event, why not so for your champ?
