l need the best and easiest way to replace my rear main seal.Step by step please,Thank you

Not familiar with ur car man, but.

Basically, ur just

1.) unbolting the driveshaft
2.) unbolting the tranny, moving it back & out of the way.
3.) unbolting ur Pressure Plate
4.) taking off the clutch
5.) unbolting the Flywheel

Boom ur there.

Just pull out ur old seal, whip out the new seal, grease it up so it seals in there.

And might as well replace ur Pilot Bearing while ur down there....hell, its already probably tore to shreds!
(its in the center of where the clutch fits at)
(i think my clutch kit from Autozone came with a pilot bearing.and throwout bearing too!)

So yea, replace ur throw-out bearing also!(goes onto the transmission spline/rod piece...you will see it!


Its alittlebit of work depending on which vehicle it is.

Its a piece of cake on a mustang, f-150 or ANY RWD vehicle.as long as the exhaust clears the transmission!!!
(otherwise u will just have to keep the tranny supported on a Jack or transmission jack, & back it out of the way slightly, so u can do everything u needa do.)
Im just saying, its easier to lower the tranny completely outta the way, then u got TONS of room to work.


l recommend going to a place with hydraulic lifts, its WAAAYY easier.

Military bases have them for rent, so grab somebody u know with a military ID card, & have them escort u on base, while u tow ur car into the hobby shop.
(its like $2 an hour to rent ANYTHING u need at the garage.including the lift.)



BTW: This is a project u can do in ur backyard with basic jacks..but ur not gonna have much room.
Its a big pain IMO..id rather make buddies with someone that works at a garage or oil change place.and ask him to allow u to sqeeze in one weekened or something.

Mike1 left out a main thing u have to do . That is to get to ur rear seal u have to lower ur oil pan .To do that u have to remove ur eng, mount bolts to raise ur eng. some Then remove three or four oil pan bolts at the rear of the pan. Then take two small screw drivers & wedge them between the pan & the block so u have room to get the old gasket or seal out ,THEN u can re install the new seals . (upper & lower) This is not an easy job for a novice but it can be done . be sure that u use a lot of silacone sealer on the oil pan to repair u gasket u damaged with the screw drivers. Good luck !

l just done this and guess what, you do not have to move the transmission. Take the oil pan off and it should give you access to the seal. It is a very simple procedure once you know this. All the books say move the tranny etc. but if you can see the oil filter you are able to change the seal. Make sure though that you also get another oil pan gasket.

exactly - The oil pan holds in the seal, not the transmission. You may have to loosen the rear main to get the old seal fished out and the new one slid in. Be sure to retorque it correctly and clean gasket surfaces and use a good gasket or you will have more gasket leaks than the seal ever thought about leaking.

An '81 250 is a 2 piece seal-just pull the oil pan and change from the bottom. But, the best thing you could do if you intend to do this yourself is go to your nearest auto parts store and buy a service manual ( l suggest Haynes over Chilton) for your vehicle and get familiar with the job first. Make sure you want to tackle it and then go get the parts-should be about $30-$40 for a seal and pan gasket. (and get GOOD ones, like Fel-Pro or Victor!) Good luck.
