l have a 20004 impala ls with a v6 3800, the check engine light came on, but it seems like it just idles low if l do not have this looked at immediately could it cause some problems..

l have a 2004 Buick with the same engine. When the check engine light came on, l went to my mechanic, who wipedthe gasoline filler neck with a rag, then also wiped the gasket on the cap and replaced the cap and reset the computer. The light has not come on since, and l have never had an idling problem. Later, l learned that some lights that were once ''check engine'' lights now say ''check gas cap.''

Take it to AutoZone or Advanced Auto and have them check it for free. Chances are you have a sensor going bad and yes, you could be walking home if you do not check it out.

probably wo not cause a problem, sounds like an o2 sensor. If you had an obd2 sensor you could read your code and replace what is wrong. Go to the auto zone and they will read the code.

How do you assume that?

O2 sensors RARELY go bad.

Could be any number of things EGR valve, TPS ect. Just get it checked because it could be something simple or it could be a much bigger problem that is developing.
