How do I know if a 305 engine I have that came out of a 1982 Z-28 is a 305 H.O., (as said on air cleaner)

Apparently, this information can be found in the V.I.N. If you know how to read the code, or can find out (maybe the local dealership could help you) how to read the code, the info should be there.

well if it is the ognal motor out of the car u can run the vin number and that will tell u if the car was equipted with the h.o. or not if it is not the u can get the numbers off the side of the block and run them one of those 2 sets of numbers will tell you

the block has code . L69 4bbl HO , LG4 4bbl plain jane, LB9 tbi. LU5 ,CFi , If l can recall there was no high output for that year. Ex-owner 82 ta. The difference was in the cam and intake design ,tune port or carb. No difference on the heads

If u will look closely the engine heads' will have a I.D. number on them.. in a H.O. engine the only thing that makes it a H.O. is the heads... no stickers or engravings can make it a H.O. just by saying it.. U must look up the casting numbers on the heads.the numbers will tell u what year the heads r & if they r H.O. .. only thing is sometimes that number is located under the valve covers on the inside ontop the heads..good luck. just by apperance most H.O. heads valve covers have 4 bolts down the middle ontop the valve covers..Just keep in mind Only the heads can make it a H.O... not the size of anything else on internaly on the motor.. also l dont think H.O. came out untill 1st fuel injection ''throttle body'' so if its throttle body u have a good chance ! ... goto Hypertech.com to buy stage chip for H.O. engines 25% horsepower increase :)

The only safe way is to pull a head and measure the bore to verify that the displacement.

Regarding 1982, there were only two 305 V8 engines offerred in Camaros - a 150hp version with a 4V carb and a 165hp twin throttle body injection.

a year one catalog for that generation of camaro should have a list of vin numbers in the table of contents, all you have to do is match up the codes to the book and you should have your answer. p.s. the 305 is the most worthless motor GM ever made

Post the ID numbers you find on the boss on the engine block by the passenger side cylinder head, if you can get to it. You may want to clean up the boss a little to see the imprint. You can also pull the valve covers and locate the cylinder head numbers, but l do not think it will tell you much.

A 305 H.O. came out with aluminum heads and intake(never one
without the other).

If your car has an aluminum intake it is a H.O. motor

On the intake(top of motor where carburetor sits) on the drivers
side on the front should be a raised grid pattern.This signifies
it is an aluminum intake.

If you have Tuned Port Injection it is H.O. as well

305 HO, thats really a contradiction, if you want performance 327 or better to start with, otherwise your throwing money at a turd. If its a daily driver, it wont matter, those are not and never will be worth much, their throwaways.

1st off that one person needs to re check some stuff.

The 305 NEVER came with alum. heads.

The 305 HO heads was cast iron like 99% of all chevy stock heads

Get ur head casting #, ur block casting # & ur block is sufix code.

Your head casting number is on the head, under valve cover in between 2 of the rocker arm studs

Your block casting # is on driver is side rear of block on the flange that transmission bolts too

Your block sufix code is on pass side front, on a machined pad in front of head
